Mycologists in Search of New Mushroom Species
The team at the Olympic Peninsula Fungi Festival is conducting a groundbreaking study on fungal biodiversity in areas previously submerged by the Elwha Dam, which displaced Indigenous communities and kept the region underwater for nearly a century. With the dam’s removal, restoration efforts are now being led by the Elwha tribe.
As part of the Olympic Peninsula Fungi Festival, participants have been taken into the field to learn how to identify and document various mushroom species. So far, the team has collected over 550 specimens from the Elwha River area, which will be sent to the Burke Museum of Natural History. Exploring these fascinating organisms holds the potential to enhance our understanding of health and industry.
