Subterranean fungi networks more than 100 quadrillion km in length, study finds

A groundbreaking new study has produced the first global map of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, revealing an underground network so vast that if stretched end to end it would reach from Earth to the Sun nearly 750 million times.

For nearly half a billion years, these fungal networks have been engineering the living soils that make terrestrial life possible. We are only beginning to understand the true scale of their influence.
